Crime Charity Tackles Donation from Police Rugby Team

Tony Shepherd, Safer London Foundation Chief Executive, was outside New Scotland Yard this week with Commander Bob Broadhurst to receive a cheque for £4,000 from Brendan McLaughlin, Police Business Manager for O2.

This donation resulted from a Met rugby team’s success at a six-a-side rugby challenge event at Twickenham stadium late last year. One of two Met teams taking part won the competition and chose Safer London Foundation, the Metropolitan Police Charity, as the beneficiary of the £4000 prize.

Tony Shepherd said:

“This is a wonderful gesture from the winning Met team and we owe them our thanks, and to O2 for arranging such a good day for all the teams who took part.

This kind of action helps us feel a real part of the ‘police family’ and the money will help us work towards our common goal of a safer London for everyone.”

This charity event was attended by teams from many of O2’s corporate clients and O2 very kindly waived the fee for the Met teams to take part. The date included two competitions: a fun league for mixed teams and a more serious single gender league which.
John Inverdale, presenter of BBC's Rugby Special, hosted the event and commentated on the matches. Sir Clive Woodward, Head Coach of England's World cup winning team, was the special guest for the afternoon, offering winning advice and presenting the trophies at the awards ceremony at the end of the day.
