People Power Celebrates Hundredth Crime Prevention Course

Local crime prevention groups were celebrating across London this week as the one hundredth training seminar was given to leaders of the capital’s ward policing panels.

Joined by the Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Tim Godwin, a number of Safer Neighbourhoods Panel leaders will meet at New Scotland Yard (on Monday 23rd November) to celebrate the achievement and inspire other Londoners to join and make a difference.

Tony Shepherd, Chief Executive of the Safer London Foundation, the charity that launched the local training initiative back in 2007 with the Metropolitan Police Authority and the MPS, said:

“Training local residents to make a difference by working with our police services to prevent crime, has been an important journey for Londoners.

“It is vitally important to support and strengthen our community leaders, so that they can better hold our neighbourhood police teams to account, and firmly challenge them to address local priorities.”

Chair of the Rotherhithe Safer Neighbourhoods Panel, Barry Duckett, said:

“This project gives the community a real voice and a real say in local policing. Local people get a real chance to learn about, and shape, local policing priorities in our areas.”

As of this week, the local ‘Community Engagement Project’ (CEP) will have completed one hundred seminars, and delivered training to some 630 Safer Neighbourhoods Panels within Metropolitan Police areas. The hundredth seminar will take place this week (Wednesday 25th November) in Islington.

The two-hour training sessions, give local residents training in:

  • Problem solving and role of a Safer Neighbourhoods Team
  • Challenges of anti-social behaviour
  • Setting local priorities for Safer Neighbourhoods Teams

If you live in London and you are interested in joining CEP, please contact the Safer London Foundation (www.saferlondonfoundation.org/cep.html). The Foundation is the charitable arm of the Metropolitan Police Service and works to help make London a safer place to live, work and visit.
