Legacy Projects

Over the past six years, we have worked closely with local Met Police officers, communities and organisations to support community-based crime prevention and victim support projects. We have also provided mentoring for ex-offenders to enable them to transition into education, training and jobs.

About Overview

We sought to tackle the challenges of crime and public safety through themed grant rounds and prioritised particular crime issues such as domestic violence and gun, gang and knife crime. From victim support to mediation, from diversionary to rehabilitation, from arts projects to promoting participation in sports, a wide range of strategies and approaches have been deployed by grantees.

Since 2005, we have funded 125 projects, awarded grants totalling £2,233,750.93 and supported over 16,000 beneficiaries, the vast majority of whom were young people.

Partnerships have always been at the forefront of our approach and that of our grantees. We worked closely with our funded organisations to provide a range of support and advice, including volunteers from the business sector and information about funding opportunities. The majority of funded projects worked closely with Safer Neighbourhood Teams, local authorities, Youth Offending Teams and engaged with a range of other statutory bodies, voluntary sector groups and organisations, as well as private sector partners.

Aspire Mentoring Programme

Alongside our grantmaking strand, we developed and delivered the Aspire mentoring programme with support from KPMG. Over four years we recruited and trained community mentors and matched them with ex-offenders referred to us by prisons, Youth Offending Teams and the Met Police’s Diamond initiative. We also developed partnerships with businesses to identify and place the programme participants into work.

The programme provided mentors for over 200 ex-offenders and supported them into employment, education, volunteering or training. During 2010/2011, less than 11% re-offended as a result of our support and over 60% progressed into positive activities.

Current project

We have tailored the programme to support the Waltham Forest gangs initiative and are mentoring young gang members to enable them to gain skills and employment.
