Mentor Training
SLF Aspire Programme - Mentor Ex-offendersThe Safer London Foundation’s Aspire project aims to support ex-offenders, through the use of trained mentors, in accessing sustainable employment and training opportunities. Experience shows that ex-offenders who have employment are up to 50% less likely to re-offend; the Aspire Project has links with a number of employers who have committed to providing employment placements.
Mentors will be linked to people who are either approaching the end of a prison sentence, or serving a community based sentence. After initial training, mentors are likely to visit those serving custodial sentences in prison, with the Aspire Project Manager. They will provide identified practical and motivational support; we envisage that contact will initially be on a weekly basis, trailing of to monthly. Regular support and training will be available from the Aspire Project, we also hope to organise peer support sessions. For more information on the Aspire Project click here or contact: aspire@saferlondonfoundation.org

“Circles of Support and Accountability”
Reduce Risk by Supporting Sex Offenders who live in the Community - Lucy Faithfull Foundation
A Circle of Support and Accountability is a group of volunteers, which is set up around a sex offender in need of a high level of social and emotional support. A Circle is both a support and safety mechanism, supporting the offender whilst holding him accountable for his actions. At the centre of the Circle is the ex-offender, the “Core Member”. He is involved from the beginning and included in all decision making. He, like other Circle members, signs a formal contract committing himself to the Circle and its aims.
Volunteers are central to the work of Circles. They need to be mature people and are selected following completion of a detailed Application Form and a process, which includes criminal records checks. Volunteers are primarily, but not exclusively, recruited from the faith community.
Volunteers are required to attend a training programme which includes information on the criminal justice system as it affects sex offenders, the thought and behaviour patterns of sex offenders, relapse prevention, group functioning, boundaries of involvement etc., so that volunteers are equipped to support the Core Member in his task of remaining crime free, and respond to worrying behaviour. If you would like to learn more, please contact The Lucy Faithfull Foundation’s Circles Project: Simon Sauze, Project Manager: ssauze@lucyfaithfull.org or Blair Parrott, Project Co-ordinator: bparrott@lucyfaithfull.org.
